Description

People Partner

RStudio creates great software that helps people understand data and make better decisions in real-world applications. Our core is an open-source data science toolchain, and we aim to make it available to everyone, regardless of their economic means. RStudio is a Delaware Public Benefit Corporation (PBC), and as of November 2019, we are now also a Certified B Corporation. We are a different kind of software company, and we’re proud to build and sell products that help people understand and improve the world through data.

Since our start in 2013, our team has grown steadily, with the release of new products and a widening base of both enterprise customers and open-source users. We are currently an organization of ~175 people, distributed virtually across the United States, Canada, Europe, and South America, and we expect to grow by another 25% in the coming year. To help us ensure that all of these wonderful humans can continue growing and thriving as members of our team, we are seeking to hire a People Partner to join our People Operations team.

Position Summary:
In this role, you will work closely with RStudio leaders and colleagues to build manager and organization capability, manage compensation programs, create employee development solutions, and advise on employee relations issues. As People Partner, you will report to the VP, People Operations, and will join a team of four other people professionals working to preserve, expand, and deepen the talent and culture of RStudio.

About You:

  • You care deeply about building diverse and inclusive teams, and are motivated to design people practices that will add to the culture we want for our future.
  • You are humble, and play well with other people. You thrive in team settings, and exhibit excellent collaboration skills. You are comfortable sharing your own ideas, listening attentively to the ideas and concerns of others, and offering constructive feedback when appropriate.
  • You are a master communicator, and excel at maintaining trusted relationships in a virtual environment. You are responsive and accountable, and are able to set clear expectations about actions and timelines that impact others.
  • You are comfortable navigating ambiguity, and you thrive in roles where you can drive both strategic and operational elements of HR work, in an environment with lots of room for new ideas and solutions.
  • You bring both energy and calm to your work, and are excited to coach and advise leaders in a vibrant and rapidly evolving company.
  • You are eager to join a values-driven company where your work can have a tremendous impact on the success of our mission, and where you can feel great about being a playing an important part in the RStudio story.

Role Responsibilities

Management Coaching

  • Consult with leaders to align people-related decisions, such as hiring, pay, and advancement, with RStudio’s values and goals.
  • Act as a trusted advisor on employee relations concerns, referring complex or highly sensitive issues to VP, People Operations or to external counsel when needed
  • Work with leaders and teams to sustain a supportive working environment that promotes equity and inclusion

Compensation Program Management

  • Manage and evolve RStudio’s base salary program, and utilize external market data to ensure that we are offering competitive rates that are equitably aligned across the team
  • Partner closely with functional leaders to develop job family and/or career level frameworks that support employee career and salary growth while avoiding unnecessary complexity
  • Build greater transparency and understanding of RStudio’s compensation programs across the team, and guide managers in making individual pay decisions in alignment with our overall comp philosophy

Employee Development

  • Build a strong rapport across a diverse set of colleagues, listening effectively to concerns and ideas brought forward by team members, and acting as a coach or mentor for those seeking to develop and grow professionally at RStudio.
  • Through 1:1 or team coaching conversations, assess employee development needs and make recommendations for learning or key experiences to support career growth
  • Recommend and implement organization-wide learning on topics that are broadly relevant and useful across the team, such as giving and receiving feedback, inclusion and allyship, coaching skills, etc.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years experience in an HR Business Partner, Generalist, Talent Management, or Compensation role, ideally with formal training in HR, IR, or OD disciplines.
  • Skilled listener and coach; able to create and maintain strong relationships with a diverse set of colleagues at all levels.
  • Strong desire to help others and intellectual curiosity about people and organization issues
  • Excellent problem solving capabilities and judgment; ability to make sound decisions independently
  • Comfortable operating in a dynamic, changing environment
  • Skilled in effectively managing sensitive and confidential communications and materials
  • Comfortable working with data, and able to independently analyze compensation or other employee information to guide decision-making

What We Offer:

  • Competitive salary with great benefits including medical/dental/vision insurance (100% of premiums covered), 401k matching, home office allowance, 12 weeks of paid leave for new parents, and annual profit-sharing plan
  • 100% remote (or come in to one of our offices in Seattle or Boston), minimal travel
  • Flexible PTO policy (take what you need, 3 weeks minimum vacation time)

Working at RStudio
The people of RStudio share a common set of beliefs that inform our work:

  • Three powerful forces — the enthusiastic engagement we enjoy from our open-source community; the trusted relationships we have built with our commercial customers; and the well-being and commitment of our team — carry equal weight in how we define and measure our success.
  • We make thoughtful and sustainable financial decisions, because the long-term health of our business is what will enable us to deliver work that benefits our community, our customers, and our team for years to come.
  • We don’t believe in hierarchical command and control. RStudio is bound together by our shared mission, not an office address or set of organizational charts.
  • While we insist on producing consistently excellent work, we know that the journey to get there may be different for each person and team. We provide space for both focused time and active collaboration in our day-to-day work.
  • We treat our customers, community members, and colleagues with kindness, humility, transparency, and integrity. We also try not to take ourselves too seriously.
  • We are committed to maintaining a respectful, inclusive, and open environment that enables amazing contributions — not just within our own company, but across the global, diverse communities and customers that we serve.

We encourage applicants of different backgrounds, cultures, genders, experiences, abilities and perspectives to apply. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, age, physical disability, or length of time spent unemployed.
