Rate of Pay: This position pays $16.50 per hour plus tips. Tips average $10.00 per hour.

Schedule: Full time, Cafe hours 6am - 4pm. Schedule flexibility, including weekends and holidays, required.

Job Summary

The Culinary Lead’s role is an integral part of the efficient, enthusiastic team that makes Grand Central Bakery’s vibrant cafes such wonderful spaces to be in! They are passionate about serving delicious food and drink to a community of loyal customers. The Culinary Lead ensures all team members are trained on proper sandwich making procedures, is responsible for meeting food cost goals, and serves as a conduit for food specific knowledge. They often lead in training and can be the PIC for all parts of the day.

The ideal candidate for this role will be customer oriented, and mission-focused. They must be a strong team player with good communication, problem-solving skills, organization, and planning.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Proficient on cafe technology such as Point of Sale, vendor ordering, and accounting systems
  • Makes and serves all GCB products to specs - including during a rush
  • Displays product knowledge of all items on our menus
  • Uses creativity and ideas for product display to maximize sales
  • Delivers excellent customer service to external and internal customers
  • Coaches team members on the floor and is able to act as the PIC in a a manager's absence
  • Assists the Cafe Manager in the hiring process for new team members, and takes the lead when training
  • Responsible for troubleshooting in all areas of cafe operations
  • Manages inventory - including pars, ordering, and invoicing - for the kitchen and sandwich bar
  • Responsible for specials and new product roll out
  • Responsible for all equipment used in the food prep area, including maintenance, cleanliness, and training

Qualifications and Skills

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English required
  • Maintains a valid Food Handler's card - new hires are expected to have a valid card by their first date of work
  • HS diploma/GED preferred
  • Basic math skills required
  • Must display professionalism and personality with customers

Physical Requirements

The Culinary Lead is required to stand for 100% of the shift. The role necessitates working in a loud environment with frequent interruptions. This position may require lifting and carrying items up to 20 lbs.

This position works in a building containing a bakery and is constantly exposed to wheat flour dust and other grain dusts (rye, corn, oat).
