About the Opportunity

This is an exciting, new, and hands-on role in a fast-growing organization working with responsible businesses that use business as a force for good. The B Corp movement encourages businesses to manage their impact on society and the environment with as much rigor as they manage their profits. The B Lab US and Canada team, currently 25 people and growing, is now looking for a full time hands-on HR Manager, internally referenced as US/CAN People & Culture Manager. The P&C Manager will help bring to life our strategy for 2021 and beyond to support the amazing work of our community world-wide.

You will advise and work closely together with the Organizational Health Circle (which stewards organizational, financial, and cultural health for B Lab US/Can to deliver against our Theory of Change) and are responsible for the tactical and operational execution of the People & Culture processes and programs to support B Lab US/CAN mission. You will plan and manage the employee end-to-end cycle including workforce planning, recruitment and selection; talent management, succession planning; compensation and benefits; continuous learning, training and development; performance management and employee relations.

This role serves as the sole dedicated HR person on the B Lab US/CAN team (an independently governed subsidiary of B Lab Global) and you will work together with the B Lab Global People & Culture team to ensure overall strategic alignment.

The People & Culture Manager reports to the Director of Operations.

Core Responsibilities
In conjunction with the B Lab Global People & Culture Team, advise on and implement strategy, policies, guidelines, regulations and practices.
Create and implement P&C policies in addition to already existing policies specific to B Lab US/CAN.
Responsible for up-to-date and reliable employee data and handle all employee related documentation for on- and off-boarding, employee status and job changes.
Manage the end-to-end talent acquisition process and counsel Managers in the selection of candidates.
Manage payroll process and leaves and absences. Administer benefits such as medical, dental, vision as provided by B Lab US/CAN.
Generate internal HR management reporting.
Provide Managers with the necessary support for continuous learning, training and development of their teams.
Strategize and activate People and Culture initiatives such as , Employee Engagement Surveys, Performance reviews and Organizational Learning and Development initiatives
Advocate and “bring to life” people focused ways of working such as “Ownership Culture”, JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion) Principles and Supportive Leadership
Develop and execute action plans as a result of Employee Engagement Surveys
Perform advanced employee relations functions including support and counseling of employees and managers in complex situations
Contribute to the compilation of the annual budget

About You
Education/Experience:
Several years (estimated at 5+) all-round Generalist HR experience in a start-up environment
Proven expertise working at tactical and operational level
Subject matter expertise in compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws, regulations and reporting, and recommended best practices; (focusing on New York, Pennsylvania, Colorado and California.) Additionally, a basic understanding of Canadian labor laws would be an asset but is not required
Proven experience with payroll management and all aspects of employee life cycle
Project management skills and a track record of being highly organized and detail-oriented while navigating ambiguity
Proficiency with an HRIS is essential; needs the ability to easily adapt to new systems (Slack, Greenhouse, Culture Amp, UKG Ready, Google Suite, etc.)
Proven experience in managing an organization with multiple locations and in a remote setting
Budget management experience

Additionally, the ideal candidate will have:
Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of key concepts in Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. Examples of concepts may include critical race theory, feminism, queer theory, privilege, protected classes, microaggressions, cognitive empathy, cultural competence, nonviolent communications, antiracist education, etc.
Proven ability to work independently and make sound judgements relating to tactical and operational day-to-day activities
A good understanding of People & Culture strategic topics
Strong verbal and written communication skills
A high level of social and emotional intelligence, communication and negotiation skills
The ability to remain focused in an ambiguous and rapidly changing environment
Openness to having uncomfortable conversations
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Strong relationship building skills
The ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality

Compensation Details

B Lab has a competitive compensation plan that includes:

An annual salary in the range of $69,000 - $74,000
Excellent health benefits package including access to medical, vision and dental coverage
Paid time off for vacation - in your first year, you’ll start with 3 weeks (prorated in a calendar year)
403(b) with a match of up to 3%
Unlimited sick and personal time - if you need it, use it
After your first year of employment, 40 hours paid time off for community service; paid parental leave; and time and budget for your professional development (we assess this PD budget annually)
