The Opportunity:
Bi-Rite Family of Businesses is seeking an experienced HR leader to help us build and scale our Employee Experience across the organization. As a mission-driven business, our people and culture are very important to us and we are looking for a candidate who shares our passion and values for building strong companies from the bottom up. Reporting to the owners and working closely with the senior leadership team, this individual will be responsible for all things people related including human resources (HR administration, HRIS processes), employee relations, payroll, learning and development, recruiting, onboarding, diversity equity and inclusion, performance management, compensation and benefits, and health and wellness, including staff safety. This leader will play a critical role in leading our evolution during an exciting period of organizational growth and will serve as a strategic thought partner to the leadership team. This role involves both strategy and execution. Yes, hands-on work is expected, especially around employee relations! Our people are our strongest asset, and the success of each staff member is important to Bi-Rite’s overall success. You won’t be doing this alone. In addition to collaborating with the senior leadership team, you’ll lead and develop a talented group of four HR professionals.

Role Responsibilities:

Internal + External Service

  • Uses the Bi-Rite Service Mission to guide every interaction, building long-lasting, trusting relationships with our English and Spanish speaking staff.
  • Provides HR expertise with friendly, personalized and attentive service to our staff members.
  • Delivers great service, supporting staff and encouraging positive work relationships.
  • Creates, uses and promotes internal processes that deliver great service to our teams.

People + Culture

  • Contributes to an amazing work environment by ensuring our environment is supportive, challenging, inspiring, empowering, rewarding, fun, exciting, educational, and personal.
  • Supports a diverse, inclusive and fair workplace by acting with humility and openness; treats others with dignity and respect.
  • Acts as an internal consultant for management and staff ensuring they are supported and empowered to make change.
  • Conducts and oversees the investigation, implementation, and documentation of employee relations issues and disciplinary actions.
  • Oversees maintenance of the HR information systems to ensure data is accurate and current.
  • Ensures accuracy of Bi-Rite policies and procedures in the Staff Guide and ensures consistency and compliance with all local, state and federal laws; updates and communicates any changes.

Talent Management

  • Plays a key role in organizational development and succession planning ensuring there is a clear path of growth and development and ensures appropriate resources are available for staff to achieve their goals.
  • Leads the design, implementation, and results of training programs for employees and managers. Follows up with managers to ensure timely orientations, safety training and on-the-job training.
  • Oversees recruitment for all positions within company providing management with qualified candidates who are diverse and are inspired to greatness while hiring from within the communities we operate whenever possible, prioritizing internal candidates for promotions.
  • Creates an amazing experience for new hires during on-boarding period.
  • Develops, maintains, conducts, and tracks completion of educational seminars for staff and managers; uses training to reinforce Bi-Rites’ expectations, culture and values.

Organizational + HR Leadership

  • Participates in planning the strategic direction of the business and in developing long-range plans to achieve company objectives.
  • Provides leadership and guidance on organizational change management.
  • Collaborates with the Director team to keep the Bi-Rite Family of Businesses running smoothly, working towards seamless and improved operations.
  • Respects our environment, values our food and supplies as finite resources, and helps achieve our Zero Waste goals.
  • Financial Performance
  • Develops and manages annual department budget; performs periodic cost and productivity analyses.
  • Develops company compensation program designed to fulfill defined strategies and company objectives
  • Researches and makes recommendations on new or alternative benefits, as requested by management. Negotiates with carriers regarding rates, services, administration, and coverage.
  • Ensures the company’s legal exposure in relation to employment issues is minimized.
  • Ensures invoices are handled according to Bi-Rite’s accounting standards.

Safety, Wellness + Compliance

  • Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal laws and regulations in all HR practices including, but not limited to, recruitment, hiring, training, compensation, separations as well as policy development and implementation.
  • Oversees and follows up on claims with employee, manager, medical facility, and insurance company, communicating information as needed.
  • Researches, recommends and manages our Worker’s Compensation carrier relationship to contain costs.
  • Ensures a safe working environment—identifies and manages safety issues and ensures accidents are documented and addressed following legal requirements.
  • Oversees wellness program for the company and reports on activity and quantitative data supporting value of the program for overall employee well-being and benefit costs.

Qualifications

  • Committed to Bi-Rite's mission to Create Community Through Food and values of Leads with Love, Pursues with Passion and Acts with Integrity.
  • You love people. You are empathetic and highly approachable to anyone in a genuine and sincere manner.
  • Genuinely finds interest in learning about and sharing Good Food.
  • Ten years of HR experience, with at least 3+ years leading a complex HR operations function. Experience with all HR functions.
  • Broad and thorough knowledge of local. state, and federal employment laws.
  • Strong employee relations background.
  • Experience designing and implementing new HR programs and initiatives in a bilingual organization.
  • Change management expertise.
  • Proven ability to organize and prioritize in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong decision-making skills with a bias for action.
  • Very strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Extraordinary learning agility, ability to bring prior expertise and adapt appropriately to our unique and dynamic culture.
  • Solid team facilitation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Fluency with Microsoft Office and project management tools.
  • Bilingual in Spanish strongly preferred.
  • Physical requirements include constant computer/desk work, sitting, standing, repetitive hand use, and occasional travel between businesses.
