Description

Gary Community Ventures seeks a full-time Software Engineer to join our award-winning Gary Builds team, which launches startup companies, operations and services aiming to solve some of Colorado’s biggest problems.

At its core, Gary Community Ventures invests in for-profit and philanthropic solutions for Colorado’s low-income children and their families. We believe that business and philanthropy can — and should — work together to create opportunities for those who need it most. More specifically, we’re committed to investing in quality early childhood and youth development systems, expanding sustainable economic opportunities, and developing and supporting programs that create healthy family and community environments.

We’re deeply committed to the urgency of this work, which is why we’ve committed to sunset as an organization by 2035. That means Gary Community Ventures has pledged to invest all assets by 2035 in service of our mission.

The Gary Builds team lives at the heart of this urgency. As the entrepreneurial arm of Gary Community Ventures, Gary Builds was created specifically to design and build new solutions to social challenges. Current examples of Gary Builds include COVIDCheck Colorado, which has become one of the largest COVID-19 testing and equity-focused vaccine providers in the state, the Dearfield Fund for Black Wealth, a down payment assistance fund designed to boost Colorado’s Black and African American homeownership, and Learning League, a high dosage tutoring program working to close equity gaps and curb pandemic learning loss in our K-12 public education system.

Reporting to the Director of Technology, the Software Engineer requires the technical skills to tackle engineering problems, the social skills to face human-factor problems and the judgment to differentiate between the two. You should be equally comfortable solving technical problems by writing code and explaining technical design architecture to technical and less technical people. One day, you could be designing a new app that better connects tutoring services to classroom work. Another day, you could be designing an interactive tool that helps first-generation homebuyers better understand the mortgage process.

We believe we can listen better, learn more, and act faster when we are able to build strong relationships in the same physical space. With this in mind, we do our work together in person. We value in person interactions. Our office is not remote, we are open to hybrid working situations but would prefer in office and we have weekly in person meetings.
