Job Description:

We are currently seeking a highly motivated, exceptionally talented, technical Tax Director.  This will be the first fully dedicated tax role on our finance team, reporting directly to our CFO, allowing a qualified candidate the opportunity to develop the tax function as Techstars grows.  The Tax Director will be responsible for a wide variety of complex tax matters, including tax compliance and planning related to our domestic and international partnerships and corporate entities, nexus & permanent establishment, customer and investor-related tax inquiries, sales/use and VAT taxes, tax issues related to compensation plans, etc.  The Tax Director will be responsible for oversight of external tax service providers.  In this leadership role, you will have the opportunity to utilize your technical tax, analytical, operational, management and client service skills.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Direct tax strategy to maximize results, increase use of credits, incentives, etc.

  • Collaborate across teams to ensure tax strategy is followed and reporting is accurate

  • Review and evaluate accounting procedures for tax compliance and accuracy

  • Coordinate and oversee complex tax returns including international, federal and multi-state returns for Partnerships and C corporations

  • Oversee external service providers to ensure completeness, accuracy and timeliness

  • Manage the tax requirements in foreign markets in which our funds invest and oversee tax documentation requirements for registration, foreign tax relief at source and foreign tax reclaims

  • Identify areas for improvements or savings throughout tax compliance process

  • Articulate and communicate tax risks, including conducting research and documenting tax analysis and positions

  • Recommendations on tax elections, for example, section 754 election

  • Ensure appropriate capital account allocations and balances in accordance with 704b and LPAs

  • Develop and maintain documentation of tax positions and assist with the development and implementation of new products

  • Tax provision and tax footnote in accordance with US GAAP

  • Establish best practices related to our early stage portfolio investments, including QSBS documentation, PFIC, QEF elections

  • Determine the appropriate tax treatment of portfolio company transactions/realization events

  • Advise on compensation plans related to various legal entity structures

  • Advise on how to build the most effective and efficient tax function over time, considering our complexity, growth, current team, budget, etc.

  • Review calculations of fund distributions in accordance with LPAs

  • Manage the information reporting process, including domestic, FATCA and Common Reporting Standards

  • Maintain appropropriate tax records for internal records, independent financial statement audits

  • Manage tax audits or inquiries

  • Oversee, with support of the Corporate Controller, state and local taxes, property taxes, payroll taxes, and all other relevant tax matters

  • Evaluate and support new investment products through researching proposed investments, product/fund structures and operational requirements



Qualifications:



  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Taxation

  • 10+ years of experience working in the field of tax, Big 4 experience preferred

  • CPA

  • Solid understanding of Tax Codes and Regulations & highly experienced at researching tax questions

  • Experience in preparing and reviewing tax provisions

  • Experience with International Tax

  • Demonstrated technical competence in income tax, compliance, and planning

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to frame tax issues in easily understood terms

  • Ability to work directly with internal and external professionals from a broad range of backgrounds and levels of responsibility

  • Detail-oriented with the ability to manage projects from inception through execution

  • Strong desire to continuously learn

  • Professional need for a dynamic, high-growth, entrepreneurial environment
