Who are you?:

You’re an experienced food and beverage manager with an intense desire to be a leader in an organization that’s supporting local culture and food, advancing sustainability and social justice, and building the Toronto community through art.

You want to engage your creativity, collaborate with a close team, and make your mark, every day.

You’re hungry to be part of something greater than yourself. You want to move the social justice movement forward, promote feminist and anti-oppressive values in the hospitality industry, and help cultivate an authentic and accessible artistic community in Toronto.

Would you believe us if we said we had what you’re looking for?

Who are we?:

We’re The Gladstone Hotel, and we’re on a mission to revolutionize hospitality in Toronto. We’re more than the sum of our functions – a hotel, restaurant, bar, and event venue. We are an artistic home for our local community; we’re an invitation to discover Toronto’s local art, food, and people.

Now, we’re looking for you, our new Food and Beverage Director to join our knowledgeable and passionate team.

Food and Beverage Director:

As our new Food and Beverage Director, your main goal is to provide strategic and tactical leadership to our multi-venue food and beverage program, while promoting our core values of creativity, authenticity, inclusion, responsibility and discovery.

With your knowledge of food, drink and genuine hospitality, you’ll work directly with our “Chief Alchemist” and collaborate with our Executive Chefs to translate the Gladstone Hotel’s vision, specifically our arts and culture brand identity, to our restaurant, bar and in-house catered events experience.

You will also champion Gladstone’s role in promoting local producers and suppliers to help capture our food and beverage market share in the exciting and competitive Toronto hospitality industry.

You’ll solidify our existing service standards, policies, and procedures. You’ll set staff up to succeed, and empower them to perform at their best. You’ll develop training to educate staff about our products and standards, coach them on the floor, and lead by example. You’ll equip our staff to be comfortable and confident, ready to take on any challenge.

We’ll rely on you to maximize our revenue by strategically managing expenses, resources, schedules, and inventory. You’ll communicate across all departments, to keep the team up to date about revenue goals, and any potential issues.

You’ll always stay two steps ahead, implementing solutions to problems that won’t have a chance to come to life.  In a business as busy as ours, you’ll succeed by being proactive, not reactive.

Practically speaking, you’ll also:

  • Work closely with the Executive Chef to execute our food and beverage vision

  • Collaborate with our Rooms Division, Event Sales and Cultural Programming teams to innovate food and beverage sales strategies and service opportunities for our hotel guests, cultural, corporate and social events clients

  • Meet with managers to prepare for upcoming events, maximizing customer service and profitability

  • Lead regular staff meetings with food and beverage staff and floor supervisors

  • Develop forecasts, analyze and identify market trends related to business volumes

  • Set budgets, ensure budgeted targets are met, and be accountable for results

  • Prepare daily sales reports for the food and beverage department

  • Perform Manager on Duty tasks when on duty

  • Keep managers and staff aware of, and engaged with our core values in service, sales, and experience

  • Ensure hotel’s fire and health and safety policies and procedures are adhered to

The Details:

This is a full-time, permanent position, working in our beautiful, landmark hotel in a vibrant neighbourhood right at the intersection of Queen Street West and Dufferin Street.

You will report directly to and work closely with our Chief Alchemist/General Manager.

You’ll work 50 hours per week, mainly during business hours. You’ll need to have some flexibility to come in for different shifts between 6 am – 4 am to work with your team as needed, and for special events.

We offer an industry competitive salary, potential to earn bonuses, and a competitive benefits package. While working, you’ll have access to meals at a steep discount. You’ll also have access to a discounted gym membership at a gym right across the street from us.

Please note, due to the historic nature of our building, your work area is not fully wheelchair accessible.

Working @ The Gladstone Hotel:

Here, you’ll practice a collaborative leadership style with other managers and the 40-50 food and beverage staff reporting to you. You’ll promote team-based decision making, and create opportunities for your team to consciously participate in the decision-making process in the front of house and in the kitchen.

We are hospitality industry leaders with a goal to be a force for good, for social change, and for Toronto’s artistic community. We operate in an openly anti-oppressive and feminist framework. We strive to highlight women in the kitchen and throughout the rest of our operations. We’re committed to making a meaningful impact, extending far beyond profits.

If you asked our employees why they love working here, they’d tell you that here, you feel like family. You can be your authentic self here, and we embrace your creativity. We’re an incredibly creative place to work, and almost half of our staff are practicing professional artists; we provide a huge amount of support to those in pursuit of art careers.

This is the opportunity you’ve been waiting for, and we can’t wait to meet you!
