Oakland Indie Awards Event Manager


The Oakland Indie Awards is a 2,000 person event that celebrates the positive impact of Oakland’s independent businesses and artists. Nominations open to the public in March 2018, and the event culminates in May, 2018 with over 200 nominees recognized across 7 award categories. Winners are announced on the day of the event. The event includes a live awards ceremony, main-stage entertainment, food and beer, a vendor marketplace, and kid-friendly fun. The Indie Awards is presented by Beneficial State Bank and Beneficial State Foundation in support of Oakland’s local economy.


The event manager will plan, design, and produce our annual signature event, while managing all project delivery elements within time limits. This includes but is not limited to: organizing facilities and managing all of the signature event’s details such as nominations and judging process, décor, catering, entertainment, transportation, location, invitee list, special guests, equipment, promotional materials, and event follow-up feedback and reporting. 


The Oakland Indie Awards consists of several events on one day: nominee & sponsor mixer (approx 250 people), awards ceremony (approx 300 people), and party (approx 2,000 people). The event manager is responsible for the overall event flow and smooth running of all events.


The position of the event manager is a temporary position.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Fund raise sponsorships to support the event

  • Design and implement outreach and marketing strategy


    • Manage event website and graphic design

    • Create all promotional materials

    • Establish promotional partnerships

    • Coordinate print, digital, and radio advertisements


  • Plan and manage nominations processVendor management


    • Promote, collect, and organize nomination submissions

    • Execute two judging sessions for nominees and finalists


  • Vendor management

  • Promote and manage all event ticket sales

  • Recruit and organize volunteers

  • Manage relationship and division of responsibilities with event planner (Twirl Management)


Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities



  •  At least three years of event management experience
