Description

We need a super-talented developer who wants to make something they can be proud of!

About us

Bright Little Labs is building a kids media giant for the 21st century. We make kids’ books, games, and products that promote critical thinking, computer science and equality. Our flagship kids story is about Detective Dot - a nine-year-old coder who is on a dangerous mission from the C.I.A. (Children’s Intelligence Agency). Kids can join the CIA and carry out personalised activities on and offline.

We’re growing fast. We started on Kickstarter, reached 30 countries, got Cabinet Office backing, and have won a few of awards. Next up: we’re launching in 22,000 schools, writing the first of 3 books with a not-yet-announced publisher, and making cartoons and games. Boom.

If you believe wholeheartedly in the power of stories and toilet humour to inspire the next generation, get in touch.

Please note, we value smart people over experience and qualifications. If you’re not sure you have the “right background” but love what we do, please apply!

About you

You should be an experienced web developer (3 years+) with the strong front-end skills needed to build web applications. Ideally, you’ll also have a good appreciation of what goes on at the back-end.

You’ll have experience building user-account oriented sites (e.g. profiles, permissions, preferences) and be familiar with important aspects of front-end development such as accessibility, security, testing and cross-browser compatibility.

We need help with these sorts of tasks

We’re building an online platform serving up user-generated content alongside in-house creations such as games and animations. Behind the scenes, it will be CMS driven. To make this, we need you!

We’re right at the beginning of this project. Key decisions on how we’ll put this together will be down to you. You’ll be responsible for:

  • Working with our back-end team on the technical design of our platform.
  • Contributing to the setup and development of our CMS.
  • Providing guidance on front-end design (e.g. best practices).
  • Electing development tools and frameworks (e.g. Bootstrap, Sass, ReactJS).
  • Lead development of our web application’s front-end.
  • Developing containers/libraries to serve our game and animation content.
  • Integrating with back-end services (e.g. RESTful APIs).
  • Setup and management of front-end interface testing (e.g. functional testing).
  • Management of version control (e.g. Git).

We offer

  • An awesome role helping to define the future of Bright Little Labs. Plenty of responsibility and autonomy from day one.
  • Exposure - we're a high-ish profile project and we work with exciting people
  • Flexible working arrangements - Mums, dads and pregnant people please apply
  • Feel good factor. You’ll be working on a project at the heart of equality, education and technology.
  • Fun - we’re building a top-secret spy agency. If we told you more, we’d have to kill you.

Please send a short and sweet cover letter telling us why you'd like to work with us. Remember we love pictures!
