The full-time core faculty reports to the Academic Program Director for Social Work Graduate programs to provide instructional and curriculum development service to the Master of Social Work program. Faculty members educate Walden University students by effectively and proficiently using online technology and resources so that knowledge, information, feedback, and critique are imparted to and shared with students in timely, thoughtful, carefully formulated, and well written communications. This is accomplished in an environment that is respectful of students, the faculty member, Walden University, and the discipline in which the faculty member is involved. Faculty members are expected to adhere to all Walden University faculty expectations, which are clearly set forth to the faculty member at the start of his or her employment with the University.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:





  • Provide course instruction, course content development, and other curricular activities as needed

  • Provide residency instruction

  • Provide academic advising and mentoring

  • Promote a social work professional identity with students.

  • Engagement in scholarship

  • Service on university and school committees and for school initiatives as needed


Full-time, School of Social Work faculty are responsible for instruction, assessment, advising, committee work, and service to the School of School of Social Work. Other duties may include grant management, research, or specific academic endeavors. Faculty members are critical in creating, maintaining, assessing, and reflecting upon a learning environment where academic discipline interweaves with the School of Social Work mission to support student learning.


Training


All new Faculty members receive specific training from Walden University in the techniques teaching, use of an electronic learning platform, specifics of the policies, procedures and degree programs of the School or College in which they are going to teach, socialization into the Walden University culture, assessment of academic integrity of student work (including use ofwww.turnitin.com), and research supervision of theses and dissertations. Full-time Core faculty interested in teaching at the doctoral level (DSW/PhD) will receive training, support, and mentorship for these responsibilities.


Course Teaching/Availability:


Faculty Members are assigned courses, which are taught using the Blackboard platform, and are responsible for interacting with students within this platform. Discussion Boards for classrooms are open 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Although postings to the classroom may be done at any time of day, they must be completed in a timely manner in accordance with the Faculty Handbook or other criteria established by Walden University. As such, Faculty Members are expected to be in the classroom a minimum of 4 days per week and responses to student questions must be posted within 48 hours. Faculty Members are required to verify the accuracy of student postings and submissions and to provide feedback and grades to students through Blackboard. In addition, Faculty members will publish their availability to students through course syllabi. The university suggests regular and predictable availability, such as online office hours or regular online chats.



Residencies

Core Faculty (Full Time) will be required to all attend residencies held domestically or internationally, where they will teach intensives and colloquia, and facilitate school and university-wide discussions

Technology Requirements:


Faculty members are required to have an adequate computer to handle an electronic learning platform, keyboard, pointing device, and computer monitor. All other tools are knowledge-based or training-based through Walden University. The Faculty Member must be able to use Microsoft Office products (MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint), zip software, and Adobe Acrobat and must have reliable Internet access as well as alternate access in cases where primary access becomes unavailable.


EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:


· Earned doctorate in area of Human Services area; Ph.D. in Social Work or related field preferred.


· MSW from a Council for Social Work Education (CSWE) accredited program required.


· Intellectual and professional contributions to the field, including professional publications and conference presentations.


· Three to five years teaching experience at the graduate or undergraduate level as appropriate to the program.


· A minimum of three years of post-graduate level practice experience required.


· Experience with providing distance education including a commitment to advocating for the learning and development needs of students earning their degrees in a distance learning environment preferred.


· Evidence of compatibility with the Walden University mission of positive social change, broad access and professional excellence and our values of quality, integrity and student-centeredness.


· Excellent leadership, communication, team participation, and human relation skills.


· Experience with distance learning preferred.


· Ability to mentor and motivate adult learners in a distance-education environment.


· Ability to work with adult learners with variable skill levels, various learning styles as well as diverse cultural and professional backgrounds.


· Some travel required.


WORK ENVIRONMENT:


Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment, but may involve exposure to moderate noise levels. Work involves operation of personal computer equipment for six to eight hours daily and includes physical demands associated with a traditional office setting, e.g., walking, standing, communicating, and other physical functions as necessary. Physical requirements of this position include the following: carrying, near and mid-range vision, visual accommodation, hearing, handling, lifting up to 40 pounds, balancing, field of vision, fingering, crouching, depth perception, and talking.
