Senior Accountant
New Market Funds, Vancouver, BC V6B 6E3
We’re New Market Funds, a multi-fund management company and a certified B Corp with a mission to deliver investment opportunities that have a lasting benefit on communities. We concentrate our efforts on community-focused real estate development and flexible financing tools, and we take a value-driven approach to impact investing. New Market Funds is establishing itself as an innovative resource for social enterprises, cooperatives and non-profits.
We need a Senior accountant who has a mixture of full-cycle accounting experience, great communication skills and strong attention to detail to take over the majority of the bookkeeping and some of the controllership activities for us.
Why work with us?
- Your work will contribute to helping create lasting benefits for Canadian communities.
- You’ll get a broad range of exposure to real estate development, private equity, private lending and more.
- You won’t be a cog in a wheel. You’ll play a key role in making our finance and accounting functions run more smoothly and be more effective.
- You’ll get the chance to maximize your potential and move forward in your career.
What’s the role?
Your overarching goal is to increase the effectiveness of the bookkeeping and controllership functions of our businesses.
Since we’re a small company, you will wear many hats and contribute across a wide range of responsibilities. For the right candidate, we see the possibility of you moving into a controllership position in the future.
Practically speaking and under the direction of the VP Finance, here’s what you’ll be doing day-to-day:
- AP/AR Management – You will enter bills and create invoices. You will make sure vendors get paid on time and do your best to ensure we are paid on time.
- Project Accounting – You will perform bank reconciliations, enter bills, onboard new partners and vendors and complete monthly reporting and draw requests for our community real estate projects.
- General Bookkeeping and Filings – You will complete journal entries, bill entries, regulatory filings, month end closings and monthly financials.
- Reporting – You will produce and present a wide range of reports (financial and non-financial) for staff, boards and investors, including budget vs. actuals, portfolio summaries and high-level dashboards.
- Audit Preparation and Management – You will prepare working papers, supporting schedules and memos. You will support the VP Finance and the auditors throughout annual audits and review engagements of all legal entities (we have 6 audits and 3 reviews – all due by March/April) and keep all engagements moving and on time.
- Special Projects – You will respond to new investor diligence questions, support investor capital calls and distributions, perform analysis during annual borrower compliance processes, create financial models for new deals and fund concepts, collaborate with the team on investment and loan closings and other ad hoc projects that are driven from internal and external stakeholders.
Full-time
You will be working full-time. Our normal working hours are Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.
How about you?
You have experience in full-cycle accounting, including bank reconciliations, journal entries, billing/invoicing, GST filings, monthly financials, preparing for audits and more. These are the must-haves.
Aside from the above, you think it’s exciting to take on the other parts of the role you may not be as experienced in. You have a proven capacity to learn new things and a willingness to jump in with both feet. You’re excited to share our values of investing in and building community and capacity.
More specifically, you are:
- Detail-oriented – You check and double-check your work and that of others to minimize mistakes and things falling through the cracks.
- Analytical – You are responsive and analytical by nature, with a strong aptitude for finance/numbers.
- Independent – You are happy working independently and also know when to bring others in for help.
- An excellent communicator – You know how to get your message across clearly and effectively. Whether it’s through email communication, in-person conversations or written reporting, you’re concise and thoughtful with your messages.
- Always improving – You identify ways to streamline processes and continuously improve, both with your own work and with that of your team as a whole.
- Excited about community impact – You relish the opportunity to use your skills to create a positive impact in your community through innovative financing tools.
- Problem-solving – When you run into a problem, you’re resourceful to try to find a way through it (Google, phone-a-friend, CPA Handbook, excelguru.com, etc.) If you don’t find a solution in a reasonable amount of time, you’re never afraid to ask for help and you know you can count on your team to support you.
Working with New Market Funds:
This position offers a competitive salary, commensurate with experience, along with comprehensive health benefits, cell phone allocation and paid vacation time. You’ll work primarily out of our dog-friendly Vancouver office located at The Amp where we share our premises with several other purpose-driven organizations. Our core hours are Monday to Friday, from 9:00am to 5:00pm, with flexibility as needed.
We’re a mission-driven team, and we love knowing that the work we do positively impacts others. We’re close-knit, we work hard, take pride in our success and enjoy having fun at work. We love being part of an organization that’s growing and evolving, all while making a difference.
- Qualifications
- Minimum 2-3 years of experience in an accounting, bookkeeping or similar role, no maximum.
- Diverse range of accounting and finance exposure (e.g., non-profit, for-profit, different industries, etc.)
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Word, Excel)
- Willingness and ability to travel 1-2x per year.
- Bilingual in French and English is an asset but is not required.
- A Bachelor’s Degree and/or a CPA are an asset, however, you do not necessarily need one or both to qualify for this role. We are absolutely open to speaking to candidates without these credentials if you can very strongly demonstrate 1) your capacity to succeed in all aspects of the role, and 2) your experience.
