Permanente Medicine was founded in the 1930s by Sydney Garfield M.D. The young physician had a vision for an independent, self-governing medical group that would bring comprehensive care to aqueduct laborers across the Mojave Desert. The group’s indomitable spirit and record of quality, affordable care soon made them indispensable to industrial workers throughout the West Coast. That same innovative, pioneering spirit that created Permanente Medicine continues to be one of their central guiding principles today.

The Northwest Permanente Medical group has a rich history that dates back to the 1930s. When we learned about B Corporations and what they stand for, we felt compelled to join this community. Our core values, our mission, our underlying philosophy of what it means to be a Permanente Physician has always been about being a “force for good.”
